5. AI Analysis and Data Processing
5.1 How AI Works
Companion Reflections:
- Generated by an OpenAI language model, only with your consent
- Use the text of your entries, never audio: your voice is turned into text on your phone and the audio is never saved or uploaded
- Sent over encrypted connections through our server functions
- NOT used to train AI models
- Cloud handwriting reading is currently switched off: handwritten pages are read on your phone only, and no photo leaves it.
What the Companions Reflect:
- The feeling and tone of your own words
- Recurring themes, patterns and loops
- Possible directions, only when you ask Little Owl
- They mirror and ask questions; they do not give advice or instructions
The AI Notice in the App describes in detail what each companion receives.
5.2 AI Limitations
Important Disclaimers:
- Reflections are NOT medical advice, diagnosis or therapy
- A reflection may be inaccurate, incomplete or not fit your experience
- Reflections cannot replace support from a qualified professional
- A reflection is one reading of your words, not a verdict on you
Your Responsibility:
- Do not rely on reflections for decisions about your health
- Talk to a qualified professional about anything that worries you
- Treat reflections as prompts for your own reflection only
5.3 AI Privacy
- The text of your entries is encrypted on your phone before it is stored; to create a reflection it is sent to OpenAI over an encrypted connection
- Under its API terms, OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes it
- Your data is NOT used to improve AI models
- You can withdraw consent at any time in Settings > How the companions think > Companion reflections
